I rarely served as an advisor for student's participation in competitions. When I receive an invitation, I often ask why it must be me? What is my potential contribution to the competition? Most students who send me their invitations fail to address these questions.
Recently, I made an exception to become an advisor for a group of students participating in a competition called the CoreNet Global Academic Challenge. Their invitation email was motivating (below). I was so happy to serve as their advisor.
At this time, I do not know the result of the competition, but I feel that they have already gained a lot through the experience of putting together a group, inviting an advisor, working on the project and producing a report.
They may now know, as an advisor, I learned a lot too. Many thanks to POON Cheuk Hei (Harry), TAM Kan Tat Alex, MAK Yuen Ling (Emila) and CHENG Chun Fung (Kelvin).

I request your assistance for three reasons:
Firstly, I am certain that your clear explanation of economic topics as observed in your classes would help us immensely with applying classical economic theories to our case. This would help us make sure we are on track and not applying the theories without a reason.
Secondly, your visits to Ghana would help us understand the difficulties in sustainable development more. As students in Hong Kong, we are lucky to live in such a prosperous environment without caring about the hot weather or mosquitoes since we have air-cons and mosquito repellent. However, I learned in geography that an increase of 2 celsius would make malaria a local epidemic in Hong Kong. Though the above measures can slightly contain the spread of diseases, aren't we falling into a vicious cycle if we continually increase the temperature?
Thirdly, your research interests are inspiring which would help us with interesting ideas in the competition. I have read your paper on how those born in the year of dragon are not at an advantage in terms of employment opportunities. It is definitely an inspiring topic as to how scientific data is used to rebut a superficial idea. It would be great that we can apply theories in a creative way like that.
